Top Three Artists From VOLTA Art Fair
During Art Basel in June 2024, a smaller, more diverse art fair was held simultaneously in the city. VOLTA aims to bring a touch of spice, sparkle or alternative creativity to the scene. During our visit to their fair, these three galleries and represented artists stood out from the vast selection of artworks on display.
Ivan Villalobos, rep. Perve Galeria
A surrealist artist who explores psychic automatism. His work is based on and revolves around, his childhood experiences playing with dismembered dolls and the nightmares that forged themselves at nighttime. The artwork takes the viewer on a journey that is dark, unpredictable, and filled with details that are perhaps symbolic. Villalobos’ style mixes mediums and techniques, which could be the result of letting the psyche choose rather than planning a painting. The automatism chooses not only the subject and context of the piece but also the overall finish.
Eri Imamura, rep. Warin Lab Contemporary
Imamura is a contemporary fibre sculptor who works primarily with beads and layers of fabrics and threads. Her sculptures include designs associated with anime and Eastern Asia on bodice-shaped pieces. From afar Imamura’s needlework could be mistaken as print or paint illustrations but with a closer look the painstaking handwork behind every bead and stitch becomes visible.
Ayako Rokkaku, rep. Gallery Delaive
A multidisciplinary artist with collections ranging from paintings to sculptures and mixed-media pieces. One thing’s certain, Rokkaku’s style has a contemporary pop art and illustrative feel which taps into the inner child of anyone. Her work is both expressive and relatable. Every piece seems to be part of a bigger story.
