Exploring Jesse Simpson’s Creepy Smiles, Orgies and Messed-up Family Dynamics

Exploring Jesse Simpson’s Instagram page to me is like watching a good horror film - I feel disturbed and deeply grossed out, but I’m simultaneously so entertained that I want to keep watching and see what else happens. Blood, intestines and gore galore, combined with witty, dark humour, juxtaposed with vibrant colours and creepy smiles, makes for objectively brutal and oddly addictive content. Jesse’s grotesque insta mini comics tell wicked stories of messed-up family dynamics, cannibalism, horny Satan and a handful of orgies- in a nutshell. Every frame is jam-packed with action which gets you so drawn into mentally untangling all of the interwoven and hidden elements that you simply can’t look away even if you want to.

When did your artistic journey begin?

I actually wanted to be an actor early on, and went to college for it, which had a major effect on my comics and reason for doing art. It's very much about storytelling for me. Also, my parents and brother are visual artists, so I spent a lot of time drawing and painting from the start.

How did you launch your creative career?

Honestly, that's what I'm currently working towards. I spent years making comics and graphic novels and in true introverted fashion, not letting anyone read them, so that's what I'm doing now, putting everything out there, and finding the right fit in terms of publishers. My Instagram has been a big part of that. It's been a great way for people to start seeing my stuff and it's been really exciting watching it grow.

What was your first big project?

I did an animation a few years back that I later turned into a comic called Frank and Perry. I did all of it myself, including some of the Voice Acting.  The cartoons took forever to make for a very short few minutes. Later, I needed to move on to something that had quicker gratification. They were definitely worth it though and I look back on them fondly. Who knows, maybe I'll make another one down the road. You can find them on YouTube/ Noiserover.

Which artists have influenced your style and approach the most?

In terms of comics I would say Rutu Modan, Jesse Jacobs, Michael DeForge, Lilli Carré.

Out of the comic books you have made so far, which is your favourite one?

It's called Honey Muck, about 80 pages.

What is it about?

It's about a woman who doesn't fit in. Her brother attempts to fix the situation by helping her to make friends, which ends up going horribly wrong.

Do you have any new projects coming up?

I'm in an art show in Portland at Nucleus Gallery in July!  I'll be hand painting some one of a kind coasters. Also I'm finishing up a new short comic called Snub, and starting up Kickstarter for Honey Muck.
